Adolf & Hussein- What’s in a Name?

Joe Coors

Joe Coors

Adolph Herman Joseph Coors II was born in 1917 in Golden, Colorado. Grandson of Coors Brewing Company founder Adolph Herman Joseph Coors Sr., “Joe” as he was known, went on to run the family business as CEO from 1982-1987. His other accomplishments included serving as regent of the University of Colorado, where he opposed the existence of minority student organizations like the Black Student Union and UMAS (United Mexican American Students). Joe was a member of the racist John Birch Society, as were many Coors family members. He was known to distribute JBS propaganda during his tenure as university regent. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Heritage Foundation, an organization whose past activities include a campaign waged in conjunction with the Ku Klux Klan to ban books in a school district written by African American authors. Coors gave large sums of money to his friend Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority Group. But perhaps his most significant “accomplishment” was his time in U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s kitchen cabinet. This group of billionaire and millionaire businessmen was directly involved in the Iran-Contra scandal, as records prove that large sums of their monies were used to fund the Contras in Nicaragua. Late in his life, Joe Coors left his wife of fifty years and married his mistress. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 85 after a battle with lymphatic cancer.

Barack Hussein Obama II was born in 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The son of a black Kenyan father and a white Kansan mother, he went on to graduate from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was selected editor of the prestigious Harvard Law Review. He left Harvard to move to Chicago, Illinois, where he practiced law as a civil rights attorney, worked as a community organizer in the South Side, and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996 and the United States Senate in 2004. His legislative accomplishments include co-sponsorship of an immigration bill with Senator John McCain of Arizona in 2005, introduction of the Iraq War De-Escalation act in 2007, and the introduction of a bill making criminal various fraudulent and dirty federal campaign tactics. In February 2007, Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States.

Similarities in Coors’ and Obama’s achievements are difficult to ascertain.  However, they do share a common bond in another area. Each man shares a first or middle name with an infamous dictator and American wartime adversary. But young Adolf likely never had to overcome suspicion and prejudice matching the intensity of the hate Obama has faced.  While his name was never a hindrance for Coors to further amass his family fortune and directly influence U.S. foreign policy, Obama’s middle name has become the basis for a hateful, xenophobic campaign waged by the w(R)ong wing of the republic party. Time and time again, they seek to use his name to imply that he is somehow anti-American. While this notion is obviously ridiculous, its momentum and reach is picking up steam.

So the next time some fool mentions the fact that Barack Obama’s middle name is Hussein, please do not hesitate to tell him/her the story of Adolph Herman Joseph Coors II. What’s in a name? Absolutely nothing.
