Who promptly gave up his WMDs the week after Reagan took office; turned away from war and embraced PEACE!

And yes, similarly to Roosevelt meeting with Stalin, who murdered 100,000,000 people. Pales in comparison with 4,000 who are really working on bringing Peace to Muslims in Iraq and the mid-east.

Jonolan,

I was speaking of both leaders and their proxies. The jury is still out on Gaddafi, in my opinion. How can we be so sure he has straightened his act up? What proof is there that this man who once supported terrorism won't do so again?

Actually, "once a terrorist, always a terrorist" has rarely been applied to national leaders who supported terrorism, just the beasts doing the dirty work themselves. Therefor, the analogies seem quite applicable. We defeated Gaddafi and he straightened his act up.

Now, if you're actually talking about the hypocrisy of NOT applying the same standards to nations as we do their proxies I'll agree with you.

Hmmm...your examples are not applicable to this particular situation. Here's the diff. In Japan (see 8/14/1945), Italy (see Italian Campaign- World War II), Germany (see Potsdam Conference) and Vietnam (see Paris Peace Accord), an end was declared in combat operations in those areas. Dick(face) Cheney and dubs have told us that the war on terr'r will never end. Once a terr'st, always a terr'st. That is what the neocons have taught me. Where is their hard-assed international posturing now? Oh that's right, all that shit takes a backseat to potential oil deals negotiated with "former" terr'sts.

Hmmm...How did you feel about normalizing relations with Vietnam? Or Japan, Italy and Germany? At what point after a conflict ends does it become OK to talk with somebody again? Is the time frame different when it's not a Democrat doing it? I think there's a difference between the U.S. Secretary of State having a discussion with a beaten enemy of a previous decade and the POTUS having open discussions without preconditions with the heads or figureheads of currently actively hostile nations.

I'm actually not sure how I feel about the latter. I do know it's not comparable to Rice's visit to Libya though.
